Canadians Find China Products Lacking: 75% Have Unfavorable View

    By Paul Midler | August 29, 2007

Canadian PieA whopping 75% of Canadians say that they have an unfavorable impression of products made in China with only 6% reporting a favorable view.

An official at the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa suggested that that the recalls are merely isolated incidents and that China’s image will not be affected as a result. Now there’s an optimist.

A survey done in the U.S. shows that 82% of Americans are concerned about the products made in China. Whenever someone tells me that the recent debate is about rising protectionist sentiment, I think about non-politicized figures such as these.

By itself, this has very little meaning.

In the early 60s, Japan had a reputation for producing cheap toys. By the late 70s, it was producing quality cars. Now, Toyota has officially become part of the Big Three.

If you want to study quality fade, then take a look at how GM, Ford and Chrysler have over the past twenty five years, produced cars which are perceived as poorer in quality than Nissan, Toyota and Honda. Even though the problem is widely known, the American Big Three have continued to lose market share and lose money in North American markets.

While you may argue that this is a different kind of quality fade since they have honored the letter of their contracts, they have lost the trust of buyers. This kind of quality fade is just as deadly as contract violations and product substitutions.

Also, why do you want to pin the blame only on Chinese products or China products? If you are going to own quality fade as an issue, you should own it wherever it shows up, not just when it comes from products made in Chinese factories.
